TURC: What has been going on in your life since we
last talked with you in 1997?
Bavu: Getting to know myself better, adjusting to
full-blown manhood, y'know? I've been lucky as far as
not losing a lot of key family members and friends. I
moved back to Austin in July 1999 and was a co-founder
of Hip-Hop Humpday, a weekly gig with live instruments
and live lyrics that's got a lot of respect on several
levels and is still going strong.
TURC: Is Reelaktz still together? Are you thinking
about a solo career?
Bavu: yes and yes. Reelaktz is primarily a local
promotion entity at this point,
and we have plans to
expand and get some product out. Projects like
Soundscape and Up^South are part of my educational
process so far, and I happen to be the only vocalist
on them.

TURC: How are you doing first of all?
Bavu: I'm doing fine, man. Since we talked last, I've
still been working on my music and educating myself on
the business. As far as the create-hustle ratio, I'm
trying to catch up on the hustle end, since it's
supposed to be 10% talent, 90% biz.
I have a 12" out with Nick Nack, who was a younger
cat coming up last time I talked to TURC. We came
together to form Soundscape,
www.crowdcontrolrecords.com as a duo. The songs on
the record have been getting a nice amount of
indie/undie-type love, which is appropriate
considering the purpose/budget for Soundscape. We
wanted to go out to Gavin in San Francisco with wax in
hand, service the dj's and build from there. The jams
are diverse, from the "classic" dj/mc duo to the
"world domination" style rapping over the hard beat,
and there's a groundbreaking type cut, "Truth", where
this female poet and I go at it. In fact, that
record's charting out in London on a jazz chart!?
Also, me and a producer named Echelon have been
working off and on under the name Up South since '98,
and we have some tight material that should drop this
year as a maxi-single, "Product". That website will
launch between now and then.
